Again, Thank You for reading Seo news and Tips on FreeIndiaTips.com. I am Purna, trying to provide you all working and premium search engine optimization guides for free. In this article I am introducing a special HTML tag for seo purpose. We are very familiar with Meta tags for Seo but Now a days Seo is not limited to Meta tags only. Several factors are included under seo, recently mobile friendly website, speed of the website and website with quality contents are the three major points on Seo.
Instead of these, there are so many factors are affect webpage seo. Rel=Canonical tag provides some additional point value to a webpage on seo. To get clear about this factor, we have to know what it is and why it is necessary for search engine.
What is Rel=Canonical?
Rel=Canonical is a html tag which aggregate the ranking point all together to a webpage with certain Url. If we try to access an website suppose http://freeindiatips.com/myseo, then we can access the webpage by url http://freeindiatips.com/myseo, http://www.freeindiatips.com/myseo, http://freeindiatips.com/09/2016/myseo, …… etc all are representing the same content but when search engine found those url from different source it will index each individually and recognize that the webpages contain duplicate values. Duplicate values or copied contents have less impact on search engine. So it will treat the url less effective even if have more backlinks.
In order to eliminate the duplicate values, we have to include the Rel=Canonical tag. Which shows that the original webpage url is that which is specified inside it. When search engine finds any backlink to the same webpage then it will give an extra point to the original url as specified in Canonical tag.
301 Redirect Vs Rel=Canonical:
301 is the permanent redirection of a url to other webpage. Rel=Canonical is the seo credit given by a webpage to another webpage. In 301 redirection, users cannot access the content of the from which they are redirect. But in Canonical tag, User can access the webpage but search engine ranking point will be given to another webpage.
When it is required to show the webpage which contain duplicate content, then we can use rel=canonical instead of redirecting the webpage by 301 redirection. When it is not required to display the duplicate webpage then we can simply use the 301 redirection.
How to Use Rel=Canonical?
<link rel=”canonical” href=”Url”>
The above code is simple html code to represent canonical tag.
Url- Url is the original webpage url, to which all points will given. Domain of the url may be differ
Cross-domain canonical URLs:
This requires the same html code but the concept is different, Cross domain canonical means, If we copied any webpage content to our webpage it is required to give them their credit as we are giving image credit by caption, similarly we have to write canonical tag on the same page by including the original content webpage Url. It is used when we have more than one websites with similar content and we have to provide the same information in two website for better service representation. Rel=canonical tag will credited the search engine ranking value to the original webpage.
